Anthony Murphy – A story of lifelong friendship

Published by Tamara Harrison - 13th Jun 2019

Two years ago, the legendary multi award-winning, Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning Anthony Murphy got in touch and asked us – “Ahhh, would Naked Wines be interested in my single-vineyard Great Western Shiraz?”

The rest is history, and even better, his story.

Great wine needs a great story; a narrative worthy of that balance of flavour and body which makes an unforgettable wine stand out.

Anthony’s lifelong love affair with the Shiraz grape and his collaboration with longtime friend, colleague and gifted viticulturist Kym Ludvigsen struck a chord with Angels everywhere.

A lifetime of friendship, collaboration, trust and… sadly, heartbreak.

While Chief at the iconic Mildara winery, Anthony was instrumental in creating the 1983 Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning best red – the most prestigious and sought after wine award in Australia. He has amassed literally hundreds of wine awards including the World’s Best Shiraz for his 2005 Heathcote Shiraz at the Decanter International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.

But, it was the simple story of two friends that hit home with Angels.

Both men had worked for big powerful wine companies and both had always nurtured a desire to do their own thing – Anthony to make great Victorian Shiraz and Kym to grow the very finest Shiraz grapes possible.

Kym’s vast experience led him to discover the very best Victorian vineyard site. He bought it, and planted it in 1995 with a proven, old, local Shiraz clone. It was a true others-in-arms collaboration. For years, Anthony bought Kym’s premium grapes and made great Shiraz and Kym got the cash to maintain his prized Shiraz block.

Then disaster struck. Kym died in a tragic vineyard accident in 2013.

Today, Anthony continues to help Kym’s family by purchasing the same premium Shiraz fruit and creating outstanding wine that pays homage to all the traits his dear friend showed – charming, generous and full of life.

‘Kym’s Vineyard’ Great Western Shiraz by Anthony Murphy sells out every year lickity split leaving in its wake glowing reviews such as this from Angel, Marcus Saunders: “The best red I have drunk for over a year. A real Shiraz. Fantastic.” and this from Angel, David Dobson “…an absolute pleasure to drink. Do you have any more?”
